Biography
Modern Sleeping is beats and jazz, lush and lavish, eclectic and funky. Pieces of 70s Brazilian MPB, 90s hip hop and early 60s hard bop are arranged within. Modern Sleeping features contributions from all ends of the CrystalTop collective, including production and sound design from Cousin Jacob, vocals from L.E.S. native jazz star Pyeng Threadgill, bari and alto work from Luz Fleming, and some jazz and dirty blues from guitarist Ryan Scott.
Tracks range from the tropicalia-influenced "Modern Sleeping IV" to the upbeat funky diptych collab with Pyeng Threadgill, "The Poor Man's You" and "Half Asleep" and the stand-out, the melancholy smooth cut-and-paste jazz of "Tax Cut."
As Baudelaire wrote of Modern Sleeping, "...always a great [Practice], frequently it is a terrifying one...it adds a more modern attitude, one that has been much sought after in the modern world; a love of the intangible, a feeling for violent contrasts and the terrifying phenomena of nature and strange human physiognomies..."
